I just started listening to these CDs. The first two lessons consist of learning how to say: excuse me, do you understand english/vietnamese, are you vietnamese/american, how are you, etc. The lessons do a pretty good job of pointing out the different tones. I find that the visual aid of the text book to be invaluable as I'm a visual learner, and it makes learning the tones of Vietnamese much easier.
